End of Life Vehicles (ELV)
* End of Life Vehicles (ELV's) are a growing concern for the world, the Australian community, the automotive industry and of course for auto parts recyclers.
More than 5000,000 vehicles are retired from Australian roads each year. Recent reports by both the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council and the Commonweath Department of Environment and Heritage found that there are signifincant levels of pollution and criminal activity resulting from non-existent or inadequate controls on the illegitimate operators in the industry.
Overseas research has shown End-of-Life-Vehicle (ELV) contaminants that enter the environment include fluid such as oil, petrol, brake fluids, coolant etc as well as toxic heavy metals such as lead, hexavalent chromium , mercury, along with PCBs. While the metal fraction of ELVs is generally recovered by metal recyclers, at least 100,000 tonnes of waste from ELVs is generated annually, representing a substantial resource loss.

Approximate Breakdown Of Materials Recovered From ELV's

On entry to ABC Auto Group dismantling yards, all vehicles are required to undergo a rigorous examination for possible hazardous material risks prior to being drained of all fluids and gases as part of the End Of Life (ELV) Recycling process.
Identifiable fluids, gases and materials drained, removed and/or recovered from ELV's as part os the ABC Auto Groups's Reclaim-Recycle-Reuse strategies include:
A: All engine, gearbox and differential fluids
B: Air conditioning gases
C: Batteries
D: Windscreens and door glasses
E: Interior trims and plastic mouldings
F: Fuels and fuel tanks
G: Asbestos brake linings
H: Body panels
I: Plastic bumpers and mouldings
J: Tyres and wheels
